Proper Hand Hygiene – Peace of Mind for Healthy Living
Hands are one of the transmission routes for many types of bacteria and disease-causing viruses. Proper hand hygiene is one of the simplest, most effective, and most economical measures to prevent cross-infection in the community and healthcare facilities.
🌈 When should you clean your hands?
🔹 Wash hands with water and soap when:
• Hands visibly soiled with dirt, blood, body fluids
• After using the toilet
🔹 Wash hands with water and soap OR use a quick hand sanitizer in the following situations:
• Before entering and after leaving a patient room
• Before and after contacting a patient
• Before and after handling invasive devices (CVC, drains, catheters,...)
• Before putting on and after removing gloves
• Before preparing medication, food
• After coughing, sneezing
• After contact with waste
• After contact with used fabrics
💖 Standard 6-step hand hygiene:
Step 1: Rub the palms together.
Step 2: Rub the backs of the fingers of one hand onto the palm of the other and vice versa
Step 3: Rub the palms together, vigorously rub between the fingers.
Step 4: Rub the backs of the fingers of one hand onto the palm of the other and vice versa.
Step 5: Rotate the thumb of this hand into the palm of the other hand and vice versa.
Step 6: Rotate the fingertips of this hand into the palm of the other hand and vice versa.
🔴 Each step should be rubbed at least 5 times with a total washing time of at least 30 seconds
