Paying Tribute to Fallen Heroes and Martyrs, Continuing the Tradition of Serving Patients

The program was attended by Colonel Phan Thi Hong Chau – Hero of the People’s Armed Forces and former female member of the Saigon Special Forces; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Dinh – Party Committee Member of the Sub-Party Committee and Deputy Director of UMC; MSc. Le Thi Anh Hoa – Party Committee Member of the UMC Sub-Party Committee and Vice President of the Trade Union; Dr. Tran Thanh Hung, Specialist Level II – Member of the Hospital Trade Union Executive Committee and Head of the Personnel Organization Department of UMC; BSc. in Nursing Vo Truong Phuong Duc – Member of the Executive Committee of the UMC Youth Union; along with more than 30 staff members and employees of the Hospital.

Dr. Tran Thanh Hung, Specialist Level II – Member of the Hospital Trade Union Executive Committee and Head of the Hospital’s Personnel Organization Department, offered incense in tribute to fallen heroes and martyrs, expressing gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence and freedom.

The delegation from University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City respectfully offered incense in tribute to fallen heroes and martyrs at the Memorial Stele for the Saigon Special Forces.

In the solemn atmosphere, the delegation, led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Dinh, respectfully offered flowers and incense and observed a minute of silence in memory of President Ho Chi Minh, fallen heroes and martyrs, and outstanding sons and daughters of the nation who devoted their youth and sacrificed their lives for the cause of national liberation and reunification. The memorial ceremony provided an opportunity for each member of the delegation to reflect on the value of peace today and gain a deeper awareness of their responsibility to preserve and build upon the achievements nurtured by previous generations.

Speaking at the program, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Dinh emphasized that gratitude should not be expressed solely through remembrance or solemn ceremonies, but should be carried forward through a strong sense of responsibility and meaningful actions every day. For healthcare professionals, this means dedication to patient care, continuous cultivation of professional ethics, enhancement of expertise, and contribution to the Hospital’s ongoing development. He noted that amid the demands of everyday work, visits to historical “red addresses” provide a meaningful opportunity for staff members and employees to take a moment to reflect, deepen their pride in the nation, the city, and their shared home at UMC, and draw further motivation to uphold dedication and compassion in their work.

Representing the younger generation of the Hospital, BSc. in Nursing Vo Truong Phuong Duc, Member of the Executive Committee of the UMC Youth Union, shared that the program provided an opportunity for young people and Youth Union members to gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history of struggle and to hear firsthand stories of the courage and resilience of previous generations. This experience helped young people appreciate life today and develop a stronger awareness of their role in preserving these traditions. For Youth Union members working in healthcare, this spirit should be reflected in proactive learning and self-development, fulfilling professional responsibilities, and actively participating in community-oriented activities.

Following the incense-offering ceremony at the Memorial Stele for the Saigon Special Forces, the delegation continued its journey of returning to the roots at the Independence Palace. There, members visited the exhibition spaces, learned about historical milestones associated with the struggle for national liberation, and listened to stories shared by Colonel Phan Thi Hong Chau. Her authentic, simple yet heroic recollections helped participants gain a deeper understanding of the resilience, courage, and silent sacrifices of those who contributed to the nation’s glorious history.

As part of the activities at the Independence Palace, members of the delegation participated in the “Tree of Gratitude” activity, writing sincere emotions, messages, and reflections on individual leaves following their journey through history. Each leaf served as a reminder of the responsibility to preserve cherished values while carrying forward the tradition through compassion, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility in every professional role.

The “Tree of Gratitude” was a meaningful activity in which each message was written like an offering of incense, expressing gratitude to the fallen heroes and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.

The program concluded in a solemn and reflective atmosphere, contributing to fostering patriotism, national pride, and a sense of responsibility among the Hospital’s Party members, staff, and employees. Drawing on the values gained from the journey of returning to the roots, the UMC team will continue to promote solidarity, strive to excel in every professional role, provide dedicated patient care, and serve the community through concrete and meaningful actions each day.
