The patient is N.P.T., a second-year student at An Giang University (Ho Chi Minh City National University). T. went to Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital for examination because of vomiting blood. After examination, doctors found that the patient suffered from severe liver cirrhosis, with blood flow through the liver obstructed, causing blood vessels to dilate and rupture. The cirrhosis also caused T.'s spleen to become congested and enlarged, extending throughout the pelvic area.

At that time, T.'s condition was extremely critical, with severe anemia, and could die at any moment. The only way to save this male student was a liver transplant. Test results checking all family members showed that only T.'s 50-year-old father was suitable to donate a liver. Usually, a person only needs to use 30-40% of a liver to meet the body's needs, and the remaining portion of the father's liver was estimated to be just enough for a transplant to his son.

The surgery was performed on 4/8. The operation to take a portion of the father’s liver lasted six hours, the liver transplant for the child lasted ten hours. Immediately after the liver transplant, blood circulation returned, the patient’s spleen also automatically shrank.

To date, after the postoperative monitoring period, Dr. Long assesses that the liver transplant case has been successful. The health of both the donor and the liver recipient is stable. Health insurance provides support for liver transplant cases ranging from 500,000 - 1 million VND for monthly follow-up visits, sufficient for the patient to purchase anti-rejection medication to take daily.

Thanks to the generosity of the benefactors and the effort of the medical team, the parental love that the student N.P.T. experienced was reborn once again. T. has met the criteria for discharge, returned home to prepare for the new school year.

According to Dr. Long, each month, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performs 1-2 liver transplants. The list of patients waiting for liver transplants reaches up to 20 cases. Among them, there are seven younger cases also vomiting blood due to severe cirrhosis like T.
