According to current studies, breast augmentation with silicone implants does not cause breast cancer, although it has been associated with a very low risk of malignant lymph node disease.

Beauty enhancement is a legitimate need, especially among women. According to statistics from the United States, nearly 400,000 women undergo breast implant placement each year, primarily for cosmetic breast augmentation, while a small proportion undergo the procedure for breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. This is truly a multibillion-dollar industry. In Vietnam, there are no official statistics, but as living standards improve, the demand for cosmetic procedures is also increasing, particularly in major cities.

According to current studies, breast augmentation with silicone implants does not cause breast cancer, although it has been associated with a very low risk of malignant lymph node disease. However, many people remain concerned that breast implants may interfere with the detection of breast tumors and make the disease more severe. Although studies show that breast implants may obscure tumors on mammography, the implants can also push the breast tissue forward, potentially making a tumor easier to feel by palpation. Most importantly, breast implants do not worsen breast cancer if a patient happens to develop the disease. Breast cancer occurring in patients with or without breast implants does not differ in terms of disease stage or subsequent prognosis; treatment follows the same established protocols.

Therefore, it is essential for women to pay attention to changes in their bodies. If a breast lump or thickening develops, or if there is nipple discharge, they should seek examination at a medical facility.

In addition, although breast implants do not cause breast cancer or affect its prognosis, it has also been reported that people with breast implants may experience symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, joint pain, anxiety, and hair loss. Therefore, when breast implants are not truly necessary, preserving the body's natural appearance is something valuable.
