Postoperative recovery guide after pelvic organ prolapse surgery

Recovery after pelvic organ prolapse surgery: Recovery timeline, activities, follow-up schedule, and warning signs

1. Recovery timeline and activities

Recovery requires patience and a gradual increase in physical activity at each stage to ensure safety:

  • After 1–2 weeks: You may begin returning to daily activities, but you should start very gently.
  • You may gradually increase your level of activity from the second week onward.
  • After 4–8 weeks: Your body will have recovered further, and you may resume sexual intercourse.
  • After 8–12 weeks: Although you may feel stronger, you should still avoid strenuous activities and absolutely avoid heavy lifting.
  • Activities that require exertion should only be resumed after 12 weeks.

2. Follow-Up schedule

Close monitoring of the healing process is very important. You should follow the scheduled follow-up visits at 1–2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 months after surgery.

3. Warning signs requiring immediate follow-up

During your recovery at home, if you experience any of the following unusual symptoms, you should go to the hospital for immediate evaluation:

  • Signs of infection or complications: Fever, severe pelvic pain, bleeding, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Urinary and bowel problems: Pay particular attention if you have difficulty urinating, pain during urination, blood in the urine, or constipation.
