Overview
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, in Vietnam each year about 200,000 people die from cardiovascular disease, accounting for 33%. Additionally, according to the Heart Institute, on average one out of every four adults has hypertension. Hypertension increases the risk of death from stroke by four times and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by three times compared to those without the condition.
If previously cardiovascular disease was thought to occur only in the elderly, today the incidence among young and middle‑aged people is increasing. It can be said that cardiovascular disease can affect anyone at any age without warning. In response to urgent societal needs, the Cardiology Sub‑department (within the General Internal Medicine Department) was established in 2004.
After nearly two years of operation, the sub‑department separated and quickly developed into the current Cardiology Department. The department’s function is to examine and screen cardiovascular risk factors, enabling early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plans for cardiovascular diseases using medical therapy, and implementing numerous minimally invasive cardiac interventional procedures to provide patients with the best health improvement options. Understanding that the heart is the soul of the body, the staff of the Cardiology Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital continuously strive each day, dedicating all their knowledge and passion to treatment to give patients a healthy heart and a beautiful life as hoped.

During its operation, the Department of Internal Cardiology at University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City has carried out medical practice training as required, receiving and training doctors from district and provincial hospitals to learn clinical arrhythmia, cardiac electrophysiological mapping and pacemaker implantation.
The department organizes classes to share experience, professional activities for nurses and doctors in the department; receives classes of research doctors, Associate Professors, Professors, postgraduates, doctors oriented to internships, study and data collection. In addition, the Department of Internal Cardiology also strengthens cooperation with universities and specialized hospitals in advanced countries to learn and implement many new techniques, high‑quality technologies.
Alongside professional work, the department continues to conduct scientific research on Internal Cardiology, applying diagnostic measures, prevention of heart disease to combine treatment with education, health promotion for the community.
