However, nowadays musculoskeletal disorders are increasingly common, affecting not only the elderly due to degeneration but also younger individuals due to sports injuries, traffic accidents, occupational accidents, congenital deformities, etc.

The Department of Trauma and Orthopedics, located on the 8th floor, Area A of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital Ho Chi Minh City carries the mission of caring for patients with musculoskeletal system issues. With an experienced team of doctors, nurses, and caregivers, the department strives to provide the best support for patients in effective pain relief, rapid wound healing, and swift return to daily physical and sports activities.

Beyond routine examination and treatment, the physicians at the department continuously engage in scientific research, teaching, and updating advanced treatment methods worldwide such as joint reconstruction surgery, joint‑spine arthroscopy, minimally invasive bone techniques, stem cell therapy, etc.

Moreover, each nurse and attendant in the department cares wholeheartedly, adhering to the principle of treating patients as family. With a commitment to quality, professionalism, and dedication, the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics has earned the trust of patients nationwide and for many consecutive years has received the Excellent Labor Collective award as well as commendations from the Minister of Health, the City People's Committee, and the Hospital Board.

Strength

On average each year, the Department of Orthopedic Trauma performs more than 2,500 surgeries, receives, examines and treats over 50,000 patient visits, confirming its leading position in research and training on joint regeneration and stem cell applications compared to other medical units in the country. Based on knowledge and skills trained intensively in the field of trauma and orthopedics, the department focuses on building and developing a joint regeneration center, applying minimally invasive techniques. 

• Arthroscopic surgery of the hip joint, shoulder joint, knee joint, wrist joint, ankle joint, … treating ligament injuries, cartilage lesions, … Arthroscopic spine surgery treating disc herniation, spinal bone fusion, minimally invasive placement of foot arch vis.

• Combined bone via small incision using C-Arm.

• Autologous osteochondral grafting to treat femoral head necrosis.

• Combined sacral region, pubic bone, pelvic bone. 

• Application of stem cells in joint regeneration treatment.

• Partial knee replacement technique, computer navigation for slice positioning (Navigation).

• Revision joint surgery: second-time joint replacement, joint replacement on patients with fractured bones, fractures around the stem, around the previously replaced implant. 

• Limb‑sparing surgery (treatment of peri‑joint tumor lesions): wide tumor resection preserving the joint – joint replacement – combined chemo‑radiotherapy. 

• Spinal deformity correction surgery and pediatric. 

• Sports medicine treatment.

Training & Research

As one of the clinical departments of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, the Department of Orthopedic Trauma also possesses certain strengths in training, scientific research, management, cooperation and technology transfer.

The Department of Orthopedic Trauma is a training institution for medical students, resident physicians, interns, specialists, postgraduate, and research fellows for the Orthopedic Trauma Division of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and serves as a specialized training center for the field of Orthopedic Trauma for domestic and international trainees (joint arthroscopy, joint replacement, …). 

In addition, the department provides practical training for nursing student courses, in‑service nursing bachelor programs as well as many medical secretary courses. Moreover, the department organizes classes and workshops applying new techniques in basic and advanced joint arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery. On average each year there are two 2‑month joint arthroscopy courses, two 2‑month joint replacement courses, and four surgical workshops applying new techniques organized by the Arthroscopy Training Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in collaboration with the Experimental Surgery Center of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The Department of Orthopedic Trauma is a leading research center in the application and implementation of new techniques in Ho Chi Minh City, while strengthening collaboration with other units (National Key Stem Cell Research Center – University of Natural Sciences – Vietnam National University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) to conduct basic bioscience research such as stem cells, artificial joint fabrication, and the domestic application of new materials on animals and humans. 

The department also concurrently presents scientific reports at domestic and international conferences. The Orthopedic Trauma Department has been and continues to provide professional support at Can Tho Hospital, Hospital 175, participating in surgeries and training for joint replacement at satellite hospitals such as Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital, Soc Trang, Hospital 30-4,…

Additionally, the department collaborates with hospitals in countries with modern healthcare systems to exchange doctors for training, updating new orthopedic trauma techniques in Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, Australia,…

Equipments

The medical examination and treatment facilities of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital are equipped with modern equipment, a spacious examination and treatment facility, meeting the needs of examination and treatment:

  • Operating rooms are equipped with advanced devices such as specialized operating tables for orthopedic surgery, computer navigation systems used in joint replacement surgery, modern joint arthroscopy systems, implantation tools sourced from reputable manufacturers in the US, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Taiwan,… 

  • The outpatient clinic operates continuously, the casting room with complete casting and orthopedic splint tools promptly meets the outpatient examination and treatment needs of patients.

The medical staff of the Department of Orthopedic Trauma includes Associate Professors, PhDs, Masters, specialist physicians and nursing bachelor graduates with many years of experience, always being further trained in expertise and work skills.

Not only the medical staff, the nursing and ward staff operating at the Department of Orthopedic Trauma are also systematically trained and highly regarded.
