Strength

For more than 10 years, urology in countries with advanced medical systems has seen the emergence of a specialized field called Functional Urology. Functional Urology encompasses Neuro‑urology, Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction, Urodynamics and Female Urology, also known as Uro‑gynaecology.

Following this development direction, the Functional Urology Department of the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City was established with the mission to become the leading center for functional urology in Vietnam and on par with the region. In addition, the department also serves as a research and training hub to expand the functional urology specialty to other provinces of Vietnam. 

Established in 2018, the Functional Urology Department applies advanced diagnostic techniques, contributing to improved treatment outcomes for patients such as: 

  • Diagnosis and treatment of urinary functional disorders (overactive bladder, lower urinary tract syndrome, neurogenic bladder, acute and chronic lower urinary tract infections, …) 

  • Diagnosis and treatment of involuntary urination disorders (stress urinary incontinence during effort, urgent incontinence, mixed incontinence, overflow incontinence, …) 

  • Diagnosis and treatment of conditions in Female Urology and Pelvic Floor (urinary‑genital fistulas, various pelvic organ prolapses, urological complications of gynecological diseases, urological complications of obstetric‑gynecological surgery, …) 

  • Diagnosis and treatment of neurogenic bladder conditions 

  • Perform diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunction using urodynamic measurements

Training & Research

Collaboration with the Anorectal Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, and Imaging Diagnosis Department in the field of Pelvic Floor.

Continuous training for doctors and staff in the department. Receiving and training undergraduate and postgraduate trainees: medical students, resident physicians, specialist doctors level I, specialist doctors level II, master's students, research fellows. 

Training and technology transfer to other units. Collaborating with medical faculties to teach and open CME‑credited training courses in their specialty field. At the same time, directing and transferring techniques to lower‑level facilities, specifically transferring technology to Kiên Giang General Hospital, Khánh Hòa General Hospital (2021), and Nhi Đồng 2 Hospital (2022). 

Combining scientific research, conducting research projects at the hospital, provincial and national levels. Numerous presentations at urology conferences on topics such as Functional Urology, Female Urology, Pelvic Floor, Imaging of urinary tract anomalies, … Also participating in domestic and international conferences to learn and exchange experiences. 

Participating in writing articles, giving talks to disseminate and educate through media.

To meet the demand of more than 7,000 patient examinations and treatments per year at the hospital, the department is equipped with facilities and modern diagnostic equipment to accurately detect and diagnose diseases, ensuring each patient receives thorough, safe, and most effective treatment and care: 

  • Multichannel urodynamics measurement room.

  • Pelvic floor physiotherapy training room.

  • Modern operating room meeting international standards, equipped with video recording system for live conferences and seminars with domestic and foreign experts. 

  • Spacious inpatient treatment room, designed modernly and conveniently. 

In addition to functional rooms, the Functional Urology Department is also equipped with modern equipment to accurately detect and diagnose diseases such as: 128‑slice CT‑Scan, 3 Tesla MRI, prostate biopsy ultrasound, modern 3‑dimensional endoscopy system, laser lithotripsy machine, laser prostate endoscopic cutting machine, operating microscope, small‑diameter kidney and ureter scopes,…

The Functional Urology Department has a team of physicians trained rigorously at prestigious medical schools in Ho Chi Minh City, especially having graduated with a postgraduate specialization in Urology at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City.
