Intensive care is one of the crucial stages in the treatment process for patients. At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (BV ĐHYD), the Intensive Care Unit is considered an important line of defense, especially for severe, life‑threatening cases with multiple comorbidities. 

With a highly qualified staff, modern equipment, and scientific, multimodal treatment processes, each year the Intensive Care Unit admits nearly 1,000 in‑patient cases and hosts over 300 domestic and international trainees for learning, ...

Strength

The Intensive Care Unit focuses on applying modern medical techniques worldwide to treat and provide the best care for patients such as mechanical ventilation, prone positioning ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), plasma exchange, hemodynamic monitoring, ultrasound in intensive care, therapeutic hypothermia, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Therefore, the department can promptly rescue and treat patients with severe conditions such as:

  • Hemodynamic instability conditions: septic shock, cardiogenic shock, anaphylactic shock, hemorrhagic shock, traumatic shock,…

  • Respiratory failure conditions: pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe acute asthma attack, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,…

  • Conditions requiring emergency and resuscitation in cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, renal, neurological diseases…

  • Severe electrolyte and acid-base disorders: hyper/hyponatremia, hyper/hypokalemia, hyper/hypocalcemia, severe metabolic acidosis.

  • Post-major surgery patients with multiple comorbidities, postoperative and procedural complications.

  • Severe obstetric and gynecological conditions such as: preeclampsia, placental abruption, peripartum cardiomyopathy…

  • Resuscitation of cases with circulatory and respiratory arrest.

  • Resuscitation after liver and kidney transplantation. The Intensive Care Unit also provides hospital-wide emergency support, interdisciplinary collaboration in treating complex diseases, and inter-hospital consultations when other hospitals need assistance. Notably, during the recent pandemic, the department was a core component in treating severely and critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Regarding training, the Intensive Care Unit organizes continuous medical training programs for doctors and nurses to update the latest knowledge. Regarding scientific research, the department participates in research projects applying new techniques in intensive care treatment, and also participates in, organizes, and presents at conferences and symposiums related to the intensive care specialty.

Regarding management, cooperation and transfer, the Department of Intensive Care directs the line and provides professional support in the specialty field to lower levels. In addition, the Department continuously develops regulations, procedures, professional regulations, projects, and plans related to the department's work and activities in a professional manner.

Equipments

To provide optimal treatment outcomes for patients, the Intensive Care Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art medical devices and equipment that enable diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of many severe and complex diseases.
